Mission: Critical

The Mission: Critical website has defines the steps to critical thinking and even has a tutorial which explains the concepts. The website is divided into sections, and consists of 4 main categories: the basics, analysis of arguments, fallacies and non-rational persuasion, and other common fallacies. The website also includes exercise and quizzes to test knowledge of the different fallacies. The purpose of this page is “to create a ‘virtual lab,’ capable of familiarizing users with the basic concepts of critical thinking in a self-paced, interactive environment.” San Jose State University’s Mission: Critical website does exactly what it was designed to do. By creating this web page, it allows students to sign on at any point and review or research any concepts that they are not familiar with. The basics section is an excellent introduction to the concept of critical thinking. Going through these individual pages lets a student grasp the simplest ideas of critical thinking. Browsing further into the subcategories will provide students with detailed explanations to analyzing arguments and fallacies. The web site is very well organized which makes it easy to navigate and find the information that you may be looking for.

  1. I definitely agree with your entire post and love how you explained the website as more than a website with words and exercises by calling it a “virtual lab”. I never thought of it that way but definitely agree with you. This website without a doubt helped me understand as well. For me the outline of terms on the first page can seem complex and foreign to anyone but can easily be understood through the thorough and clear explanations followed by exercises and explanations to your answers of the exercises. Your last sentence definitely summed up my thoughts of the website exactly. Organized websites are so much easier to learn off of rather than an overloaded website which can be so personally overwhelming.

  2. I agree with you on the useful things about this website. It is great for us students who are taking critical thinking .It gave very detailed explanations of key terms and concepts. The book does a good job of explaining but this website does more and explains it in more depth making it easier to understand. I found the website much easier than the book. The quizzes were great as well and when you got an answer wrong it explains to why you got that answer wrong which is very good. The site also provided terms and concepts the book didn’t have.
